Advanced Woodworking for Kids is a more advanced program for kids 12 and older who are excited about woodworking and want to expand on skills they already have. We will do one or two complex projects involving new tools, techniques and materials. This program requires greater focus on the part of the student.

Each student will be required to provide their own ear protection. We will provide safety glasses.

The course will include the following elements:

Wood – each class will begin with a brief discussion of one or more important and wondrous characteristics of trees and wood.

Safety – Personal safety and the safe use of hand and basic power tools common in the wood shop will be covered. In addition, the use of safety glasses and hearing protection will be stressed.

Creating and Reading Basic Shop Drawings – students will represent their ideas in simple scale drawings noting measurements and specific details.

Simple Machines – The practical uses of simple machines as they occur within tools and project design will be explored.

Tools – Basic hand and power tools essential in the woodshop will be introduced and used in the creation of specific projects. Hand tools will include tape measure, square, hand saw, hammer, drill, screwdriver, files, hand plane, chisels, and knife. Power tools will be limited to electric drill, drill press, scroll saw, band saw, jig saw, router and biscuit joiner.
