1, 2, and 3 Section BindingsLocation: Online Zoom Meeting

Northwoods Book Arts Guild, in partnership with the Folk School Fairbanks, is excited to offer BOOK ARTS BASICS SERIES 2- SEWN BINDINGS. In this series, we offer an introduction to three structures of sewn bindings that add distinctive visual elements to the character of each book. The three classes in the series are: Japanese Stab Binding with Susan Campbell on April 11; Wrap Around Binding with Laurel Herbeck on April 25; and 1-, 2-, and 3-Section Bindings with Margo Klass on May 2.

This workshop will introduce you to sewing sections into books using patterns of stitching along the spine that become important design features of the finished books. We’ll begin with a binding holding just a single section and progress to bindings of two and then three sections.

1, 2, and 3 Section BindingsEach book features different papers for covers, endpapers, text blocks, and cover embellishments. We’ll discuss paper selection, measuring, cutting, fitting, and sewing technique as we create three artful books. Diagrams and templates are provided to guide future bookmaking.

Students will receive a kit of materials, including papers, thread, etc. In addition, students will need the following tools.

  • cutting mat, 18 x 24” or larger
  • cutting knife and blades (eg: X-Acto)
  • bone folder
  • awl
  • rulers: 2” wide x 18” long (2 of these) and a 3.5“ wide x 12” or longer (optional)
  • scissors
  • pencil (fine line) and eraser
