Fat Bikes allow people to experience the great outdoors in a new way. Cyclist Rachael Kvapil examines the important things to consider when selecting a bike, gearing up for inclement weather, and planning a safe journey from start to finish.

During the classroom section of this class, we will start by discussing the criteria to consider when choosing a fat bike and how to best research different models without spending a lot of money. Next we will talk about basic gear for short rides in inclement weather with options for longer rides, including evening rides. Last we will address planning a route, the reality of biking with wildlife, and overview a basic travel plan and communication options while biking.

On Saturday, November 13th, we will come together again for a group ride on trails in or close to town (location to be determined).

Note: Participants will need to bring their own bicycle to the ride. If you do not own a fat bike, please contact the instructor, Rachael Kvapil, at pagesculptor@gmail.com or 907-347-8756 and she can direct you to some rental options.

Important: During the indoor section of this class we require that all participants wear masks and practice social distancing. Masks must fit securely, and cover both nose and mouth. If the Fairbanks region continues to be in the “high” zone for COVID cases, we may decide to do the classroom portion of the class via Zoom.
