Creating Self Color-Blocking Yarns from Hand-Dyed, Multi-Color Roving

Fairbanks Fiber Festival Class

Instructor:  Susan Willsrud

Dates of the class: Sunday, Tuesday, & Friday, October 9, 11, & 14, 2022

Times of the class: Sunday: 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm; Tuesday & Friday: 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Location: Pioneer Park - Cabin 66 (Click on the link for accessibility information.)

Colorful, hand dyed roving is a thing of beauty. However, it can be challenging to spin it in a way that retains the color and beauty of the dyed fiber. This course will offer spinners a way to approach spinning colorful, hand-dyed roving into gorgeous yarn that can be used to “self color block” in one-of-a-kind finished projects. Students will have several different patterns to choose from and will adapt a pattern specifically for the yarn they have created.

Students Must Bring: a spinning wheel or drop spindle (a limited number of wheels are available for loan) and knitting
needles of various sizes.

Wheel Borrowing Option: Calypso has some spinning wheels (with bobbins) available for use during the class, and you can take the wheels and bobbins home with you to practice in between classes. They ask for a $100 deposit, which will be refunded at the end of class. Please email christie@calypsofarm.org to reserve your wheel early to ensure availability!

Check out the Fairbanks Fiber Festival website.
