Straw marquetry is the process of cutting pieces of flattened straw and gluing them onto a substrate (usually wood) to create a design. For more intricate designs, one can glue them onto card stock and then wooden forms.

It is uncertain where straw marquetry was developed, but it was made famous during the Napoleonic Wars, when French Prisoners of War spent their time decorating boxes and household goods with straw marquetry and then were allowed to sell them to the townspeople where the prison was located.

Fortunately, we now have access to straw which has already been cut and flattened and is dyed in bright colors. During class you will learn how to cut and glue the straw onto wooden earring blanks. You should be able to finish 2 pair of earrings during the class. Additional earring kits will be available for purchase at $2 a kit during class. These kits will include everything you need to make more earring sets. You will leave class with a supply/toolkit, patterns, and all the information you need to make more at home on your own.

Straw Marquetry is a fun and fast craft that is easy to learn. These earrings make very unique handmade gifts. If French Prisoners of War can do it, you can do it!

1. We will be working with an x-acto knife. You know your skills best. Because the blades are sharp, it is always possible to cut yourself, so please work carefully.
2. Because her husband is extremely immuno-compromised due to cancer and cancer treatments the instructor asks that all students wear a mask over nose and mouth during class. Thank you for helping to keep him safe.
