Traditional seat caning is nearly a lost art. Now is your chance to restore that old chair that has been sitting in the garage waiting for a new seat!
In this class you will learn the traditional method of seat caning, also known as “hole to hole caning”.
The materials fee will include everything you need to complete your seat, but you will need to provide a chair to work on. The chair needs to be in good condition (not in need of repair aside from the seat) and needs to have predrilled holes around the perimeter (as shown in the photos). If you do not currently have a chair, there may be one at a local antique or thrift shop.
The instructor also has some chairs that are in need of caning and students may complete the project on one of her chairs, but will not keep the chair at the end of class. (In this case, the instructor will pay the materials fee.) Contact the instructor if you plan to choose this option at akmtngrl@gmail.com.
One more option would be to weave the seat on a hand caning stool frame, such as this: https://hhperkins.com/shop/p-hand-caning-stool-c-4-frame/. You will need to order this far enough in advance to receive the stool by the time class starts.
Note: Please register by January 3rd to allow time to order supplies.
If you have any questions at all about chairs or materials, please let us know at registration so that we can have everyone ready to weave by class time.
