7 session class – Ages 11-14

Instructor: John Manthei

Dates of the class: Wednesdays, November 7- December 19, 2018

Time of the class: 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm each session

Location: Pioneer Park - Workshop

The goal of this program (in addition to having fun making cool stuff) will be to develop proficiency in a wide range of woodworking tools and techniques. This kit of skills will be a stepping stone to further explorations into craft of all kinds. As is the case with building almost anything; design, aesthetics, math and physics will play a role. The nature of projects we undertake will be tailored to the evolving skill levels and interests of the students.

The course will include the following elements:

Wood – each class will begin with a brief discussion of one or more important and wondrous characteristics of trees and wood.

Safety – Personal safety and the safe use of hand and basic power tools common in the wood shop will be covered. In addition, the use of safety glasses and hearing protection will be stressed.

Creating and Reading Basic Shop Drawings – students will represent their ideas in simple scale drawings noting measurements and specific details.

Simple Machines – The practical uses of simple machines as they occur within tools and project design will be explored.

Tools – Basic hand and power tools essential in the woodshop will be introduced and used in the creation of specific projects. Hand tools will include tape measure, square, hand saw, hammer, drill, screwdriver, files, hand plane, chisels, and knife. Power tools will be limited to electric drill, drill press, scroll saw and band saw.
