Make your own rustic y-knot hooks!

Hooks made from tree branches ("y-knots" as woodworker Phil Marshal calls them) are wonderful in many ways. The hooks themselves are easy to make from tree branches and they have a million uses. Larger hooks can be used for things like ropes, cords, and tools, and smaller ones for coats, clothes, towels, or even jewelry.

Y-knots are amazing in that they are naturally extremely strong. The tree designed them to hold up not only the weight of a branch full of leaves, but a load of snow. They are also designed not to break in strong winds.

Each kit includes 2 short sections of tree stems containing a branch or two (resulting in 2-3 hooks). Following the instructions in the video tutorial, you will simply split the stem in such a way that the branch sticks out perpendicular to the newly created split face. You will then flatten the split face and shape the hook however you would like. The flattened surface can be attached directly to a wall or to a board with a couple of screws.

If you don't already have one, a carving knife (sloyd knife) can be included for $24. In addition to a carving knife, you will need a hatchet, small axe, or large kitchen knife and a hammer or similar item to tap the hatchet or knife through the log. A small saw is also helpful, but not necessary. A screwdriver and screws will be needed to mount the hooks to a wall or board.
