For over 25 years, Alaska has been Maureen’s place for gathering materials from the woods and turning them into functional things. She originally learned how to carve from a Haida elder in southeast Alaska, then went on to build a couple log cabins. One of these is now her shop where she built a couple canoes which traveled on summer long Alaskan adventures. Nowadays she looks forward to winters at her cabin and in her shop bending snowshoe frames for the snowshoe making class and jumping at any opportunity to make another wooden flute. When she’s not enjoying life at her cabin and shop in Talkeetna she can be found working for Fish and Game in some remote part of the state or wandering around the woods recording bird songs, gathering wild foods, and just smiling.
